Honolulu City Councilman Duke Bainum dies - Pacific Business News (Honolulu):

Bainum was 56. He most recentlu represented Manoa in onthe council. A statemenr read by Mallory Fujitani, a member of Bainum's said Bainum "was feeling well at work and that there were no prior indications of ahealth problem. She said he suffereed chest pains Tuesday night and was taken to a hospitaloemergency room, but could not be revived. A medical doctor by training, Bainum was a Democratg who served in the state Housed of Representatives from 1990 to 1994 representing After serving inthe House, Bainum was a city councilo member from 1995 to 2003. He was elected to city counciol againin 2008. He ran for mayor in but narrowly lost toMufi Hannemann.
Bainunm left Hawaii after the election, returning to his family's small-town bankintg business and various other enterprisesin Arkansas. Hannemann said he was shockes to learnof Bainum's death. "Io served with him on the City Council and we vied forthe mayor'sa seat in 2004. Throughout it all, I knew him as a man with a heartfel t desire tohelp others," Hannemann said in a statement. Bainum is survived by his Jennifer, and two sons, Z and A special election will be held to fill his seat within60 days. It will be the second special election for the councilo inrecent months.
The council recentlh held a special election following the deatj of council member Barbara Marshall of Ikaika Anderson wonthat election.
